Osamu Nishihira

About me

Osamu Nishihira is a New York City-based artist inspired by the rhythms and movements of West Africa. Born and raised in Amami Oshima, a tropical island in the south of Japan, Osamu traveled to Kenya, Tanzania and Guinea pursuing his love of African music. In 1992 he co-founded the Fareta School of Dance and Drum in New York’s Greenwich Village. His painting reflects his upbringing in the colorful tropics and his love of rhythm. Among his influences are the painters Larry Poons and Kikuo Saito, both of whom he assisted in their work.
